Company Description Submit New Info
Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Ltd. (AWA) of Sydney, New South Wales, came into existence with the merger of Marconi and Telefunken in 1913. The directors set up Australectric Co. in September 1918 due to demand for radio equipment.
AWA was involved in design, development and manufacture of advanced aeronautical communications, navigation and surveillance systems from 1945 into the 1980s.
AWA worked with Marconi in England on television systems starting in 1948, and in 1954 provided the first experimental TV broadcast in Australia during Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Tour.
Starting in the late 70s, Mitsubishi of Japan began to manufacture for AWA making televisions and a variety of other electronic devices. AWA-Thorn became the Australian distributor for Tannoy, Revox, AKG Acoustics and Clarion (car audio)
There seems to be very little information about their Association with tape recorders in spite of the fact that they very likely manufactured them, or at least distributed them under their brand Magictape.
