Description

The Teac X-3 Was the entry-level smallest of the final X series produced by Teac. Small enough that it could almost be described as a portable (based on what was happening in the 60s) A good-looking and excellent sounding machine for the money that didn’t seem to sell particularly well. Perhaps it was the fact that Teac had so many offerings and Reel enthusiasts at this late time, were more geared to the high-end market. In spite of relatively few sales, they did release a mark II, perhaps a bit higher spec and price. If anyone has any information about the differences, please send along. The Teac X-300 and X-300R followed in 1983 with slightly better signal-to-noise specification and these R-R decks continued into the early 90s.

With the X series, no other tape-recorder manufacturer released as many models as Teac did at the same time. They sure got a lot of mileage out of the X-3 and X-300 designs by making TASCAM variations in half-track (22-2) and 4-track (22-4) and the OEM Radio Shack TR-3000, which was essentially the same.

If you own an X series Teac you may want to read the Service Considerations detail on capstan motor issues.
