Description

Using a Denon proprietary, direct drive capstan system, the rotational speed of the motor is controlled by detecting pulses recorded magnetically on the outer rotor of the capstan motor. This results in low wow and flutter with a very fast tape start-up. This mechanism detects the tension of the tape during travel and controls the AC voltage applied to the reel motor. During recording and playback, the tape tension (back tension) between the supply reel and the capstan is kept constant and optimum regardless of the reel size or tape winding diameter. Head contact is more stable as the tape tension near the head is constant regardless of the tape winding diameter of the supply reel. During fast-forwarding and rewinding, the tape tension wound on the reel is kept constant and optimum regardless of the reel size or tape winding diameter.
A hard permalloy head for broadcasting stations with a wide track width is used for the head, and excellent recording and reproduction characteristics with little noise and little distortion are obtained. In addition, the large size of the reproducing head suppresses low-frequency fluctuations (shape effect) in frequency characteristics at 38cm/s.

The last stage of the recording amplifier connected to the recording head is a push-pull circuit, and the maximum allowable output level of the recording amplifier is 30 dB or more relative to the reference level as is the case in professional machines.

The same electronic tension servo was used on the later model, DH-710S.

The last picture with the many old transistors etc. is an example of the parts that may be in need of replacement to bring it up to speed these days.

Another translation about their Transport and electronics from the 510 Model…

Newly developed direct tension servo
The servo arm detects changes in back tension on the supply reel. Uneven winding of the tape, or changes in tape tension caused by eccentricity of the reel. Movement of the arm is transmitted to the auto-adjust tension brake band wound around the brake drum to keep the tape tension constant.
When the tape tension increases, the servo arm moves and the brake band is loosened, adjusting brake pressure to keep the tape tension constant. The mechanism has the same performance as an electronic tension servo and uses a braking material that will not deteriorate with age.

The direct tension servo does not damage the tape as it is very fast from tension detection to response and the vibration generated by the motor is eliminated as voltage is not applied to the supply side reel motor so the start-up of the tape transport is improved as impedance rollers are not required.

The power supply for the amplifier section is 35 v, higher than most Japanese designs.
Dynamic range is similar to professional machines with more than 10 dB above the saturation level of the tape, which is more than 30 dB above the standard recording level.

IC logic with fast switching made this machine more suitable than most Japanese machines of the day for serious recording.
