Description

The G651 was the last open reel recorder made by Geloso and Magnetofoni Castelli (the Castelli S4000 being identical to the G651). It was a half-track mono machine with a maximum reel size of 5″ and two speeds, 3¾ & (1 7/8 ips.

The recorder could be powered from AC 100 to 240V 50/60Hz), a 12V power supply or eight 1.5 volt “D” size batteries (giving up to 24 hours of non-stop playing time).

Controls consisted of 5 push-buttons: Record – Play – Stop – FFW – Rewind. Whilst these push buttons had lost their bright colours that were so much a part of previous Geloso styling (in favour of the ‘new’ silver look), there were small colour coded strips situated below the buttons to retain the tradition.

The speed selector had three positions: 9.5 (3¾ ips), – Riposo (Rest – which released all of the idler wheels to prevent tire printing) and 4.75 (1 7/8 ips). There were two knobs, the first was the treble / record level control and the AC mains on-off / volume control.

A small VU meter with a green and red scale had a dual function. On playback the pointer would indicate (in the red section) the charge of battery and in record it operated as a regular VU meter.

Inputs were provided in the form of a DIN socket for mike and remote and there was an output for an external loudspeaker, headphones or amplifier plus a multi-pin connector (4 pins) for mains power supply which disconnected the internal battery pack.

After the G651, Geloso produced cassette recorders only.
