Why not buy the Heathkit version of the Magnecord 1020 for $400 and have fun building the electronics while saving $170 off the regular price of the 1020, a lot of money in 1966. It was suggested that the build time for this was 25 hours.
These are great sounding tape recorders, better than most Japanese for playback purposes.
