Description

Introduced in late 1976, the RT-2022 utilized an RTU 11 transport unit and one  TAU 11 pre-amplifier. A quadraphonic, four track version was available, the RT-2044 that used two of these preamplifiers.

They were, of course designed for 10½ ” reels and could record and play back at both 7½ ips and 15 ips. Both models were equipped with three heads.

The pioneer RT-2022 (1st pic) and RT-2044 are semiprofessional tape recorders and the most expensive open reel decks Pioneer ever made. They definitely sound better than an RT-909 or 707 but have slightly lower signal-to-noise ratio.

The RT-2022 featured two-track heads with two channels and the RT-2044 featured a JT 2044T four track/four channel head unit. The head assemblies were interchangeable.
Both models were considerably larger than the other open reel decks in the Pioneer line.

The RT-2022 measured 18¼ ” w  x  21¾ ” h  x  10¾ ” d  and weighed over 62 pounds. Its list price was $US 1250.00. The RT-2044 was the same width but was six inches taller at 27.50 inches weighing 74 pounds.

Additional Info

If you’re considering buying one of these it’s important to make note of the fact that the connecting cable with unique rectangular Plug is included as they are very hard to find in the deck will be useless without it.

Reviews

Weighty as it is rare.  I was lucky to find mine in the stock 2022 configuration, listed only as "reel tape player" an online estate sale in the heartland, lost among farm tools and barn supplies. While I got it for a steal, shipping raised my initial investment 200%.  Additional costs included an additional head (4 track, stereo), the "umbilical" cord (I found a good authorized reproduction made in Turkey), a new pinch roller (Italy), plus misc system and aesthetic touchups (e.g., leathercloth cleaner/polish).
