Description
The Pioneer RT-707 is a rack-mountable stereo four-track tape deck with three motors and a pitch controllable AC Servo Direct Drive capstan motor. No belts to stretch or crack, ensuring low wow & flutter over a long working life. This machine is built like a tank and most technicians will tell you that they don’t see many of these in for service. With its unique dimensions, it is similar to the RT-701 which was introduced one year earlier. The 707 added foil-sensing auto reverse for playback and the following additions located on the back panel- output level pots , DIN input outputs and switched AC terminals. Recording can only be done in the forward direction only.
RT-707’s have become very sought after in recent years as they are, relatively speaking, more affordable than many of the upper end Japanese R-R’s. At the Barclay Crocker facility in Poughkeepsie, they used an RT-707 and quite a few enthusiasts report that the 7″ BC tapes sound particularly good on 707’s without Dolby decoding.
Another detail that should be noted about this machine is that if you want to hook up an external preamp and continue to have auto reverse convenience, that might be quite challenging, But it can be done. We will be posting the information on how to do this in the coming months.
An optional wood case was offered in certain markets, but is very hard to find. The dimensions of this machine 12¾ x 19 x 8¾ are quite unique.
