Description

This tape deck was manufactured in Japan and imported by Radio Shack who sold it with their own in-house ‘Realistic’ badge affixed to the head cover.
A similar marketing ploy was used by the UK company Teleton Electro of Robjohns Road, Widford, Chelmsford in Essex, who put THEIR badge in exactly the same position (see pictures at left) and also sold it as as the model ‘999’.
Whatever the brand name and origin, the 999 was a quarter-track stereo tape deck with three heads, three speeds and a seven-inch reel capacity. It boasted modest specifications at a modest price and was ideal for the amateur hi-fi enthusiast who already had an existing amplifier and speaker set-up.
Other features included facilities for sound on sound, sound with sound, mixing, echo effects, stereo headphone jack and a tape/source switch for off-tape monitoring while recording.
Price when new was $159.95 in the USA.
