Description
Following the success of their model 3, Tandberg released the quarter-track Model 4 in early 1959.
It had three heads and a bass boost switch and was in fact very similar
to the model 5 except that the 5 had a stereo playback amplifier.
The Model 4 required an external amplifier for stereo playback although
it had an integrated equalised pre-amp for the second channel, allowing
any ‘non-equalised’ amp such as a radio) to be used. (Later models, like
the 84, 94, 14 and 15 only gave a direct ‘free head’ output so the external
amplifier needed to have its own playback equalisation).
