Description
Promoted as a “home
studio” stereo recorder/amplifier, the N4450 was a three-speed quarter-track
recorder designed for vertical or horizontal operation and had automatic
and manual reverse.
An electronically-controlled Hall brushless DC motor was used for the
capstan drive and two DC air-gap motors for the two spools, which provided
tension so that no mechanical friction on the spools was necessary.
Six heads were fitted, an erase, record and playback for each direction
and all transport functions were solenoid-controlled.
Reels of up to 10½ inches were accommodated and the built-in stereo
amplifier delivered 20 watts per channel. The motors could be turned off
for amplifier use only.
