November 1959…
A VERY INTERESTING American battery portable recorder, known as the Steelman Transitape, is now available in this country. It has two speeds (1 7/8 and 3¾ ips), uses standard 3 in. reels, measures 9¾ . x 6½ x 2 ins. and weighs under 6½ lbs without batteries. Claimed frequency response- is 150 to 7,500 cps. Seven transistors and two diodes are used in the design. There is a built-in 4 in. p.m. speaker,
but an output jack provides for private listening through the microphone or earphones, or playback over a large external speaker.
The recorder operates satisfactorily at any angle, with the leather case closed if necessary.
The price, with crystal lapel microphone, is 55 guineas.
