Additional Details

In a 1965 Hi-Fi magazine ad, the Viking Company of Minneapolis drew an analogy of the design of their model 88 tape deck to that of a spoon or a Volkswagen:
‘ …they are made for a specific purpose and fulfill it so well, he basic design never changes …’

Which is probably why their ‘ 88 looked much like the ‘ 85 of 1959 and the ‘ 77 from 1956!.  However, as ‘… spoons have become better balanced and VW’s have larger tail lights, we’ve added a pause control, improved the automatic stop, included a pilot light and a push-button on the tape counter, but we haven’t changed the basic design …’
