Description
Developed simultaneously with the 9100X, the 10XD had the added appeal of a 10½ inch reel capacity and was (with the introduction of the 9200XD) the first Tandberg reel to reel recorder with Dolby B noise reduction. It also was the first Tandberg to feature the tape speed of 15 ips.
The 10XD was a tape deck, designed to be used with an existing hi-fi stereo system and as such had no built-in power amps or speakers.
Unfortunately, this, and the other Dolby recorders of the 1974-75 period, proved to be a bit too ‘tricky’ and overcomplicated for the average consumer, and as a result, didn’t sell very well. The 10XD was replaced by a non-Dolby version, the 10X less than a year after its inception, making it rather a rare bird these days and perhaps a bit of a collectors item.
Unfortunately, this model has a DC capstan motor that already started having difficulties in the early 2000’s. As beautiful as this machine sounds, it would not be a good investment to buy the secondhand market. The Tandberg 9200xd, which was quite similar with a 7 inch reel capacity, does not have capstan motor issues.
Both of these machines used early logic ICs which are prone to failure and apparently a pretty basic chip, still available in the Russian market.
