Utilizing the tape transport from the GX-210D, the 202D-SS was a two speed, three motor, surround sound deck with four heads: a full track erase head, a quarter-track stereo erase head, a quarter-track 4-channel recording head and a quarter- track 4-channel playback head. None of the heads were Glass Xtal (GX). The full track erase head erased all four channels simultaneously during four-channel recording.
Like all of Akai’s Surround Sound recorders, the 2002D-SS could be used in either 4-track 4-channel mode or in regular quarter-track stereo mode, a switch on the front panel being provided for this selection. The auto-reverse feature could be used in 2 channel stereo mode only.
Other features included tape selector and four line-in controls and four microphone inputs with a VU meter for each of the four channels. Two headphone outputs were provided.
