Description
In the early 1980’s Revox had produced many iterations of the B 77 and it was time to get a studio capable tape recorder into their consumer lineup. The PR 99 Mk 1 really wasn’t much different than a B77, so a couple of years later, they introduced Mk II which had the following refinements…
Digital counter with zero locator (left of the headblock)
Built-in Varispeed (switch, LED and potentiometer (above the headblock)
Adjustable repro EQ, which the MKI did not have
Splicing block (right of the headblock)
Tape dump (for spooling tape into a waste-bin)
Other features included: integrated control logic with tape motion sensor which allowed any desired transition between different operating modes contactless electronic switching of all motors & remote control of all functions.
The Mk I was easily distinguishable by its mechanical counter, the Mk II featured auto-locator and brushed aluminum top and bottom face plate, and the Mk III sported a dark grey lower panel. Calibration screws are on the base for setting up the recorder. Detailed instructions in the PR99 manual will allow a competent user to align the machine and to bias for your brand of tape as well as the VUs and peak indicator LEDs.
Apparently a much rarer slow speed version of the Mk II was available, but not many people would want 3 3/4, 7 1/2 in half track.
There are 2 companies that we are aware of that are doing rebuilds, refurbishing, refacing of this machine and hope to have them represented on the website shortly.
