Description

Sony bought a US-based company, MCI in 1982 and the APR-5000 series of machines were an extension of what they acquired. This series represents some of the  few large format professional reel to reels that Sony ever made. Models included the 5001 (single channel), 5002 (stereo) and 5003 (stereo with third channel for time-code).
The recorder boasted fantastic frequency responses at all speeds and was designed primarily for mastering, hence the ability to handle the large 12 inch reels.
The 5003 was one of the few machines with a built in time code generator (it was able to record an accurate time line on the tape, readable on other machines such as Studers).
Sony used an unusual and unique tape path system, designed to give better handling than the usual dual tension arm setup.
The recorder was self contained with a built in meter bridge metering audio and time code levels, as well as a built in monitor speaker.
