Description
The GX-270D-SS (and its 10½ reel capacitiy big brother the GX-630D-SS) were Akai’s last ‘Surround Sound’ recorders. derived from the GX-270D, the GX-270D-SS had an auto-reverse capability in 4-track 2-channel mode only. It also featured Akai’s Quadra Sync feature which allowed it to be used as a mini home 4-track studio, similar to Teac’s A-3340.
Four heads were utilized, a full track erase head, a quarter-track 2-channel erase head, a four-track playback head (used for bi-directional playback in stereo mode) and a quarter- track 4-channel recording head. There were three motors, an AC servo for direct capstan drive and two eddy-current reel motors. Transport controls were of the full logic solenoid type with a jack provided for the optional RC-70, RC-17 or RC-18 remote control units. A 5% pitch control function was fitted and inputs comprised of four microphone
and four line with four line and two headphone outputs available.
